It once kept some folks warm but the gold and the people are all gone. All that's left of a house at the old goldmining settlement of Waiorongomai is this concrete chimney stack in the middle of the farm paddock. I enjoyed the walks here and there are some of the old mining structures still to be seen in the bush areas. Great views over the Waikato from the Kaimais as well.

My goal is to present images of objects and places as naturally as possible with minimal post processing. I think the natural qualities will come through for the viewer with a little contemplation. Unfortunately there is little time for such things these days.

Don from Spokane, United States

The old smokestack looks out of place now, but long ago the cows would have been unusual.

The landscape is just magnificent. There is a lot of history here. That remains of the chimney is beautiful. I would have loved to have seen the house. A gorgeous composition.

Anna Cherer from LA ROCHELLE, France

It's very strange to see a chimney in the middle of the field ! the landscape behind is really superb !

18 May 2019 7:54am

@Anna Cherer: When you drive round this country you often see these solitary chimneys, the reason is that the rest of the house is timber structured while the chimney is always masonry or concrete. demolishing and removing the timber structure is easy compared with the chimneys which are often just left standing :)

Shaun from Massachusetts, United States
